Tap Into Your Inner 5 Year Old

July 13, 2012

By Joy Sinegar, Chicago Now

No one prepares us for the day we become full-blown adults. It seems as though our lives change overnight from pizza and caffeine fueled all nighters to wanting to be in bed by 10 pm.

I’ve learned to accept adulthood and buckled down to being a responsible human being.

However, my life is good because I tap into my inner 5 year old.

I’ve learned quite a bit about life through this method, I’ve learned that…

Being naked is awesome!

Nothing spells comfort like taking off all of your clothes and running through the house naked. When you were little, you didn’t care who saw you naked because you were comfortable in your own skin. Why not have that same confidence now?

It is alright to get dirty.

What’s the point of the great outdoors if you don’t get out and wallow in the dirt? Go fishing and camping or just some local rock climbing. Whatever you choose, you’ve just improved the quality of your life as an adult.

It is okay to say, “No”.

Now that we’re all grown up, we find it hard to say “No”. It’s the reason we get overwhelmed with too many activities. As a kid, I never had a problem expressing the fact that I didn’t want to do something, I just said so. As an adult, I find strength in the power of NO.

Drinking milk is good!

As children, our parents told us that milk is good for the bones  and many of us hated the idea then. Well, it’s time to get back into the routine now. Milk is a great source of calcium maintaining strong teeth and bones. As adults, paired with good oral hygiene, milk helps us keep our REAL teeth longer.

Saying, “Sorry” goes a long way.

As kids, we’d hurt each other’s feelings and it felt like the world was ending. Leave it to a good old apology to make the world right again. As adults, we harm each other and rarely apologize for our actions. Some times, a simple apology can mend everything.

Peanut butter & jelly sandwiches are great!

There’s something about pb&j that soothes my soul. It takes me back to 1st grade and hour long recesses. I pack myself one of these sandwiches when I am feeling nostalgic and it creates such fond memories.

I hope you allow your inner 5 year old to come out to play with my inner 5 year old.

Enjoy life!
