What’s The Boldest Move You’ve Ever Made for Your Happiness?
September 18, 2012
Have you ever done something really bold, out-of-the-blue and totally against the grain all in the name of enriching your life? Maybe you broke up with a boyfriend and moved to Paris. Maybe you decided to ditch the gym membership and take up jogging (even though you’ve never jogged in your life). Maybe you bought yourself a pair of embarrassingly expensive shoes. “Life is short.” “You only live once.” These are the words that played in my mind when I decided to do something completely out-of-the-box recently…
I live in Seattle, where I write this blog and my novels. I have a cute little office (emphasis on little) that adjoins the kids playroom, so I can listen to their shenanigans while I work, and where my golden retriever snoozes under my desk. I am blessed, happy, and couldn’t ask for more. But guess what? I have always had a fascination with houseboats (a la “Sleepless in Seattle”). Because babies and houseboats don’t exactly mix, my husband and I had given up on the dream of ever living on one, until a few weeks ago, when he made a really generous offer to rent me a houseboat for an “office” for four months while I work on my fifth novel, which happens to be set on a houseboat.
At first I said no, worrying that this would be an outrageous expense, but then … I began to think about how amazing it would be to sit on the deck with my laptop, to wake up in a little loft and begin writing with coffee in hand while peeking out my porthole window with a view of the Space Needle. And, my new novel would be richer for the experience. How else would I share the realities of houseboat living if I’ve never lived on one?
So, I took the plunge (quite literally) and rented a houseboat on Lake Union in Seattle, where I’ll be spending as much time as possible this fall writing (I’ve rented it through New Year’s).
Was it the smartest financial move? Probably not. Was it slightly impulsive? Yeah. Will I regret it 30 years from now? Absolutely not. In fact, I think it may be one of the most exciting things I’ve ever done, and I’m already planning my first dinner party on my little floating home. Who’s coming?!
Come check out the photo tour of my little houseboat! And, here’s a bit more about the new novel I’m writing, and my latest novel, Blackberry Winter, out in a few weeks! (Have you pre-ordered? I would be so honored!)
So, tell me: What outrageous (big or small) thing have you done in the name of happiness or “I only live once”? I’d love to hear!
