Non-Random Acts of Kindness

There is a thrill when someone ahead of us pays for our toll or our food in the drive-thru line. Our faith in humanity is restored, and a strong light inside us wants to shine that goodness onto others. It’s called pay it forward because we feel almost compelled to do it…until a day or two later when the glow wears off.
I love random acts of kindness. Keep doing them. But what about non-random acts of kindness, purposeful, consistent kindness to others AND ourselves? These are harder but much more meaningful because we go deeper and develop a habit.
Kindness is deep. Nice and polite stay on the surface, but to be kind, its much more soulful. How are you to your fellow human beings? Polite or kind? Do you pretend to listen so the other person won’t think you’re rude, or do you really listen? Do you do something nice so karma won’t bite you in the butt, or do you do it because you honestly care about the wellfare of others?
How about to yourself? Many of us don’t even pretend to be nice and polite to ourselves. We say stuff to ourselves that we would never say to others. How are you kind to yourself? Do you take care of yourself, make time for yourself, forgive yourself, stop the hatred to yourself?
This week, I want you to be mindful of kindness. Notice if its shallow or deep. Notice your motivation. Notice if you’re doing it to yourself. And, yes of course, practice random acts too.
Let the Breathe & Smile community know, how do you practice kindness? How do you make a habit of it? How do you practice kindness to yourself? You may just have the solution another is looking for, and that’s a very kind act!
